Graham Brown-Martin

Graham’s first involvement with handheld computers in education was in 1987 when he gained one of the first DTI SMART awards to develop a “handheld computing device for school children” called Satchel. He is the founder and managing director of Handheld Learning Ltd., a U.K.-based consultancy, software publisher, and catalyst for change in the U.K. educational technology sector. Supported by the government’s programme to invest in the development of U.K. schools and ICT infrastructure, the vision of the company is that within the next 10 years every child will have a handheld or mobile learning device. Its mission is to provide software and services for these devices, from single applications to end-to-end device management and deployment solutions. As part of this mission, the company has provided tools to bring together an active online, free-to-access community of leading academics, educators, and developers to share ideas, knowledge, and experiences.

Prior to this, Graham has enjoyed a career spanning the technology and entertainment software industries, having built a number of creatively and technologically innovative enterprises that were acquired by larger corporations, including Philips Electronics and Virgin Interactive.

Aside from his work and entrepreneurship in technology, Graham has also directed music videos for The Fall, Malcolm McLaren, Salt Tank, and The Future Sound of London, amongst others, and with artist Buggy G Riphead he designed the ship’s computer for the feature film Lost In Space. Graham has also appeared in a variety of media, including The Times Education Supplement, The Assignment, Trace, Transculturalism, the BBC Money Programme, The Guardian, Management Today, and The Times.
